Fish and chips

Had dinner at Fisherman’s Wharf just now, with Resh (kudos to Jess for showing me the place). I ordered the Atlantic cod, squeezed over with a juicy lemon and with side dressings of malt vinegar, curry mayo, tartare sauce, and honey mustard. Mmmm. Baby had the (inadequate) Danish meatballs with cranberry sauce; a lesson learnt - you don’t order meatballs in a store that specializes in fish and chips.
Their fish fillets are pan-fried in batter, and come on brown paper in a pretty little basket. Despite the fried part, it’s surprisingly not very oily, and the cod I had was deliciously light and fluffy. Oh, ask for the fresh-cut potatoes, they’re better than the American fries.
Previously I’d tried the saithe loin, which is a fish from the cod family (I’m a sucker for cod), which is priced at $10.50, and tastes good too. The price is more than reasonable (Joel take note :D direct bus back home some more), with the cheapest fish and chips platter costing only $6.50. Drinks are kind of pricey though, my orange juice cost $3 and a can drink costs about $2. My Atlantic cod platter was $14.50.
It’s a really lovely little place right opposite Clarke Quay MRT station, with old-school wooden decor, plush blue velvet seats and seafood posters on the wall. The only quibble I have with the place is that it’s non-aircon and permits smokers to puff away inside the restaurant. Luckily tonight there weren’t any smokers, although the whole place was full.

The best thing I loved about Fisherman’s Wharf tonight is that there was a cream Vespa parked out back, the exact color and model I lust after.
:D

Saw an old man fall on the escalator today in Raffles City Shopping Centre, right next to Subway. It was quite horrifying; first we heard these “kadunk kadunk thunk” sounds, so we turned to look, and there he was sprawled face first on the escalator which was still trundling its way upwards. Everytime the treads went up, the man ‘kathunked’ down a tread again. It was a terribly vicious cycle. There was already a group of men around him trying to help him get up, so we just watched in transfixed horror from our seat at Subway (where baby was making up for the inadequate meatballs). At first I’d been scornful because I thought he was one of the group of young men, and I’d assumed he was a piss-drunk wanker who couldn’t stand up straight. But then it turned out to be an old man. They finally stopped the escalator and managed to get him to his feet, where he continued bleeding copiously all over the treads; it’s true how head wounds bleed. I wonder how he fell in the first place.
So anyway Resh demands that I post this on my blog. There we were in the MRT station right before I went in, and we were hugging good night. I slipped my hand into his back pocket and he promptly went “Ah ha, trying to steal my wallet!” Oh well, since accused of the deed, might as well be hung for a sheep as for a lamb, so I really took his wallet and slipped it into my bag. Cheerfully wished him a goodnight and tried to escape, and we started tussling in a fit of laughter as he tried to get his wallet back and I tried to go into the MRT station.
“She’s stealing my wallet! She’s stealing my wallet,” he started saying, pointing at me with one hand while grabbing my arm with the other. We couldn’t stop laughing, and he couldn’t get his wallet back, and then this old Malay man complete with songkok walked past us. Resh looked straight at him and pointed at me.
“She’s stealing my wallet!”
I promptly stopped moving and looked at baby in utter horror and mortification. The Malay man grinned at us and patted Resh on the shoulder. “Yes yes, kissy kissy, kiss her,” he said and walked away.
I started thwacking him.
“HOW COULD YOU!” I was really embarrassed.
And his brilliant excuse was: “But it was funny!”
